To make this period easier, here in her own words are some tips and suggestion from Geraldine, a nurse who underwent this surgery in late 2019.
Pre-operative planning:
Raise the end of your bed or mattress to assist in elevating your foot post-op.
Insert a bed cradle to keep the blankets off the operative foot.
Obtain knee walker or crutches, walking frame, walking stick, shower stool (a second chair to sit on when drying yourself outside of the shower is very helpful).
A toilet raiser or handles to help get off the toilet.
A Handy Bar handle (see image above) to place in the door latch of the car to help get out of the car.
Using a knee walker:
A flat shoe that covers and protects your toes on the unaffected foot helps prevent injury to that foot.
A flat slide-on shoe is easier for those quick visits to the toilet and to remove before showering.
Post-operative:
A pillow between your legs can help protect your other leg from the "moon-boot".
Shower:
Hand-held flexible shower head.
A small plastic stool to put foot up on in shower.
Make sure everything you need is within reach.
Car travel:
Slide in the back seat of the car with pillows to support your back and operative leg, remember to always use your seat belt.
